Have you ever wondered why some objects float in water and others sink? An exciting experiment was performed in order to help Transition class students understand, why such phenomena takes place! If you put an egg in a cup of tap water, it will sink to the bottom. But, if you add enough salt to the water, the egg will actually float back up to the surface! Why is this?
Ok, so obviously we know that salt makes the water more dense allowing more types of objects float when they might not in fresh water. Fresh water is less dense so many things sink.
After the floating egg experiment with salted water and coloured fresh water, the students tried another exciting experiment with coloured fresh water. Have you ever wondered what happens once you add fresh water to salted water? The coloured tap water will sit above the salted tap water because salt water is heavier than tap water. That couldn’t be observed without adding colour!
